Matte vs. glowing – what’s your skin base preference?

It’s a question a lot of us face on a daily basis – matte or glowing base? Both have ups and downs in terms of popularity, but both are equally attractive. And the good news is that products to achieve both looks can be purchased pretty cheaply, meaning that you can fill your make-up bag and mix your base up on a daily basis, to suit your preference.

Matte and marvellous -

If it’s an entirely matte base you are after, then it’s a good idea to start by properly priming the skin to ensure the products you layer on stay there until you’re ready to remove them. A favourite among celebrities is Illamasqua Matte Veil Primer – a cream-gel formula that mattifies the skin without drying it out. For a cheaper option, try BodyVerde Pore Tight primer. This all natural product contains super berry fruit and marine plant extracts combined with grapeseed oil and vitamin E to provide the perfect matte base for your foundation. It can also be worn alone if you are looking for just a light coverage. If you find your skin is oily in particular areas, then give Ariane Poole Cosmetics Instant T-Zone Mattifier a try. Apply to the forehead, nose and chin to stop shine in seconds.

The next stage is the foundation. Clinique’s Stay-Matte range is a good choice as it is completely oil free, giving a lovely, matte finish. Try the Oil-Free Makeup, which gives good overall coverage without feeling caked on. For a high street alternative, give Rimmel’s Stay Matte Foundation a go.

To keep your look in place all day, it’s important to finish it off properly. The traditional way of doing this is with a powder - Clinique’s Stay-Matte range, the Sheer Pressed Powder, is a good call. Or you can give a setting spray a go – like Urban Decay’s De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray.

Glowing and gorgeous

It’s important to prep with a good moisturiser for your glowing base, to ensure skin is dewy and plump to begin with. Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow Primer is a fantastic product to start with, as it diffuses light to give the skin an instant “spotlight” effect. Smooth onto the skin before foundation and use throughout the day on top of your make-up to maintain a glowing finish.

On the foundation front, celebrity favourite brand WUNDER2 has recently released their COVERPROOF foundation. As well as making the skin look flawless, it is waterproof and transfer proof, with a 24 hour plus long wear formula – perfect if you’ve got a long day of work followed by a night out with pals.

One star who knows how to look radiant at all times is Joan Collins, and she has recently launched her own Timeless Beauty range. Try the First Base Foundation, which is enriched with anti-ageing ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid to plump and smooth the skin as well as making it look radiant and natural.

Finish off your base with a dusting of Airbase HD Micro Finish Powder in Glow – a luxurious finishing powder which combines a shimmer and HD finish to brighten the appearance and complete a stunning look. For more of a bronzed look for summer, try iS Clinical Copper Firming Mist. It hydrates skin and cools you down, as well as boosting the skin’s luminosity with its copper sheen. Mist over make-up throughout the day.
