Magical mermaid shades
With Halloween just around the corner once again, you can bet billions of people are preparing their spookiest outfits yet for never-ending parties to celebrate the spooky holiday. But if you’re not a fan of going gory, we think this enchanting mermaid look will make you stand out - and not in a scary way.
We’re going for blues, greens, turquoises and purples for this finish, many of which will be metallic or sparkling to give it a magical feel.
Start with a clear smooth base which isn’t too dry, as you want colours to stick to it. You also want to ensure the tone is as close to your natural complexion as possible; the last thing you want is for your face to be a different colour from your neck, and for colours to come out wrong.
Next, place the leg of a pair of fishnet tights over your head. We suggest a neutral colour so you can see coverage underneath better. You may look ridiculous but this is the only way to get the desired finish to resemble scales!
Using a make-up sponge or your fingers, start applying your make-up. Cream shadows or heavy loose powders, like Kiko Cream Crush Lasting Colour Eyeshadow in Pearly Turquoise or Pearly Emerald, or MAC Pigment in shades like Hi-Def Cyan or Rich Purple, will stick best. Start with one colour and tap along your temples, the top of your forehead and along the tops of your cheekbones.
Then take your second shade and apply around the first colour, though work it a little more towards the centre of your face. Keep things light; if you go too heavy it will look tacky and be VERY messy.
Lastly, to give the magical shimmery finish, get your hands on a silver cream or loose powder shadow. Gently tap it on the prominent parts of your face, such as the bridge of your nose, centre of your forehead and above your cheekbones.
Very gently remove the fishnet leg and finish off your eyes, using the same shadow you started with, to give a light layer on your lids and some light blue or pale purple mascara to elongate your lashes. No eyeliner needed because it may seem to bold against the softness of the rest of the make-up.
Lips can be kept neutral and glossy, giving all attention to the rest of your look!
