How to wear blue lipstick
There was a film out in 2013 called Blue is the Warmest Colour. But the truth is, blue is a pretty cool colour and on your lips could easily make you look like the walking dead. But celebrities have recently shown us that there is a way to wear the shade without looking like a corpse. Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and model Joan Smalls have all sported varying shades of blue on the lips and we think it’s high time we all gave it a go. But there are factors that need to be taken into consideration when embracing such a bold hue.
Firstly, choose the right shade for your skin tone. Cooler blues with violet undertones look best on warmer shades of skin. If you want to go electric blue, it’s worth remembering that the lighter your skin, the bigger the pop of colour. A crowd-pleasing shade for all skin tones is a deep, smoky navy, which is pretty flattering on everyone.
As with any lipstick, you should always line your lips first, but when embracing blue, this is absolutely paramount - unless you want to look like you’ve been drinking blue Slush Puppies all day.
It’ll probably be hard to find a lip pencil in the right shade, so use a clear one instead to help prevent colour feathering and bleeding.
With such a cold colour on your lips, it’s important to warm the rest of your face up, so don’t go too far down the pale and interesting route. Choose a blusher that will give warmth to your cheeks.
The final word of warning is to go easy on the rest of your make-up. Blue lips will make you stand out enough on their own, so lay off the heavily blended eye and lots of eyeliner and instead embrace a more natural look. Go for nude shimmering tones and plenty of mascara.
