Help peeling skin
You must have heard it a million times before, but sun damage is something to take extremely seriously. However there's no use waxing lyrical about sun cream when the damage has been done and your skin is already peeling. Make a serious note to keep it as a one off and slather the protection on next time, and then take a look at our tips for soothing sun-damaged skin.
First off, why do we peel? It basically means your skin has been exposed to harmful UV rays for too long and the entire top layer is now coming away. The damaged skin will then make way for the new layer hiding underneath. This process normally happens anyway, but the shedding is usually far more gradual, which is why you probably rarely notice it.
It's possible to buy products to help with peeling skin, such as the Oskia Micro Exfoliating Balm. It can be used on the face (where peeling is probably most noticeable and in need of treatment) and removes the dead skin without using abrasive chemicals. You'll be left with a plumper and brighter complexion instantly.
If you want to try some at-home remedies, start raiding your kitchen cupboard for some olive oil. Take the extra-virgin variety and warm it slightly in the microwave (not too hot though!). Massage it gently into the affected areas twice a day or if that's not effective enough, add some salt to make a scrub.
You'll also notice a lot of the products in the shops feature aloe vera. That's because it's soothing and moisturising and naturally aids with inflammation and itching. Pick up some aloe vera gel at your local pharmacy, then add some vitamin E oil with two tablespoons of the gel. Apply to skin, allow it to dry and then rinse off.
While it should be relatively easy to banish peeling skin, it's important to stress that prevention is better than cure. Avoid direct sunlight when the sun is at its highest (usually between noon and 3pm) and slather on the sunscreen daily. Reapply every few hours to ensure you're protected against UV rays.
