Fake that healthy glow

If your complexion needs a burst of radiance, try out the pearl-effect trend.

This season is all about creating a contoured glow with minimal effort as we leave the winter months behind. Since sunshine may have been in short supply recently, we need to fake that sun-kissed complexion with a few clever cosmetic tricks. Luckily, there are plenty of pearlised products around to give us a healthy shimmer.

Pearl accents dominated the Spring/Summer 15 catwalks and they are available in a range of shades to suit any complexion.

"This is great to add a natural glow to your make-up but you must be careful to not over do it!” Beth Margetts, from the London MakeUp School, told Cover Media. “Ideally you would just apply your favourite iridescent product on the highlights of your face, cheeks and brow bone. Overusing the product or placing it down your t-zone will create a sweaty finish rather than a dewy one.”

If you want an added contouring effect, sweep a pearlised bronzer along the hairline and the hollows of your cheeks. This will create a flattering candle-lit glow.

The key is to concentrate on areas where sunlight would naturally hit your face, so think brow bones, bridge of the nose and top of cheekbones to fake that soft focus radiance.

Iridescent cosmetics are great for uneven complexions as they can blur imperfections and minimise the appearance of fine lines. Some also contain argan oil and essential vitamins to keep your face hydrated and healthy.

“I like to use a light reflecting primer under foundation for a natural glow, NARS Light Optimising Primer does a perfect job of enhancing skin naturally and add a shimmer powder blush like Bobbi Brown's new Brightening Brick on top of foundation for more impact,” Beth added.

The pearl trend has also reached the eyes, with plenty of shimmery shadows available. Navy blue and bronze were popular on the catwalks for this season, so keep ahead of the pack with a creamy pop of rich colour.

Lupita Nyong’o nailed this look at the Oscars last month, pulling off the perfect pearl palette. The actress stunned with a luminous complexion and iridescent smoky eye make-up – and even followed the theme through to her outfit, which was made from over 6,000 pearls.
