Facial series: Deep tissue

If you've ever had a deep tissue massage you'll know it's a world away from the relaxing spa image conjured up when thinking about the usual procedure. Deep tissue rubs are needed for people suffering with chronic aches and pains, and focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. So now imagine having that on your face. That's what celebrity facialist Michaella Bolder (@michaellabolder) has honed; a facial that gets the deepest layer of your facial muscles working.

"Vigorous massage on typical areas that show ageing and congestion can help to combat further problems," Michaella told Cover Media. "Muscles love to be massaged."

Michaella's technique involves using a strong pressure from either her fingertips or knuckles and working the skin in circular motions. Pressure should be applied hard enough to give skin a warm, pinky glow.

"Fingers need to be work deeply around your face to activate the blood circulation, collagen supplies and awaken the muscles," she noted.

"Using massage will plump the muscles returning your natural facial contours, drain unwanted toxins which clears your skin from impurities and congestion and improve your general wellbeing. It also relieves stress and tension, leaving your skin glowing, hydrated and feeling fresh.

"You should treat yourself to a facial every four to six weeks for best results."

Michaella's go-to products include Rodial Super-Food Facial Oil and also the brand's Pink Diamond Lifting Serum, which comes with a hefty price tag but produces "amazing results and is a great primer".

As well as working the face, Michaella is also known for her techniques inside the mouth.

"This process finalises the facial massage treatment used for many years by dentists and facialists to unlock jaw problems and to remind muscles where they should sit," she said.

The facial expert is also a tanning and skin finishing artist. Other top products she turns to are Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, REN Glycolactic Renewal Mask and Crème De La Mer - The Lip Balm.

"I couldn't live without Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream," she added. "And St. Tropez Self Tan Luxe Facial Oil for a gorgeous glow in place of make-up."
