Don’t be afraid of beauty oils

Most women are usually trying to rid themselves of oil - think oily skin and greasy hair. Ironically, the very substance we’re running from could be the answer to your beauty problems. Women have used oils in their skincare routines for centuries and it’s finally been revived for the modern woman in a variety of forms for face, hair and body. Here we round up some of the best products containing oils which fight dryness, leaves hair silky and targets wobbly bits.

Hair oils

Have a Cleopatra moment and drench your hair in fragrant oils. Hailed as “liquid gold” in its native Morocco, argan oil has quickly become a must-have for the beauty conscious woman. It’s rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, and can help turn dry, coarse and unruly hair into softer, shinier and more manageable tresses. Massage a liberal amount of the oil into your scalp, hair and tips and then wrap it in a towel to prevent it from staining your pillow. Leave the treatment on overnight if you can - or for a few hours - and then wash out the next morning with your regular shampoo. Try celeb favourite Moroccanoil Treatment Oil, used by stylist Robert Vetic to tame and smooth Scarlett Johansson’s hair at the Golden Globes or Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil.

Facial oils

These help the skin to regenerate and add radiance. There is a facial oil suitable for all skin types, even if your skin is oily. Use two drops (or more if the product specifies), rub between your palms to warm and pat the oil over a cleansed face. For dry skin, Trilogy’s Certified Organic Rosehip Oil contains 80% essential fatty acids, vitamin E and the antioxidant lycopene, all well known for their ability to promote skin repair and rejuvenation of skin cells. Clarins’ Lotus Oil is perfect for oily or combination skin. Its blend of rosewood, geranium, and lotus extracts tighten pores and refine the skin texture.

Make-up artists love oil primers for their added radiance. They can be used alone or under your favourite foundations, moisturisers, creams or concealers. Try Smashbox’s Photo Finish Primer Oil and MAC Prep + Prime Essential Oils. They create a hydrating base for applying foundation, meaning make-up will blend seamlessly, and not just slide off.

Body oil

For a sexy treat, you can’t beat a gorgeous smelling body oil. Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Shimmering Body Oil has, as you would expect, an incredibly seductive amber/floral scent, and looks luscious especially as it’s spiked with micro fine gold glitter. It’s the perfect product to descale sad winter-ravaged elbows and shins. Or for oil that’s little more hardworking, Neal's Yard Detox Toning Oil targets wobbly bits.

The multitasker

Coconut oil isn’t just popular in the kitchen these days; it’s perfect for face and body, and a great multitasker. Choose a raw version, that’s organically certified for the best quality like Dr Jackson’s which only uses 100% organic coconut oil. It’s solid at room temperature but melts to the touch. Use on lips, hair, cuticles and feet. Or try Elizabeth Arden’s cult favorite Eight Hour Cream which is now available in oil form, which does feel a bit greasy at first, but after less than a minute it absorbs into parched skin (and ratty, dry split ends), leaving behind nothing but silky smoothness and a delicate floral scent. A handy spray bottle allows you to apply it in seconds with minimal mess.
