DIY lip treats

Show your lips some homemade love with these super simple recipes.

Usually our pouts lose out when it comes to luxury moisturisers and most of us make do with affordable lip balms. However, splashing cash on a beauty problem doesn’t necessarily lead to better results, so we’ve decided to give DIY treatments a go.

There’s no excuse for chapped lips, so first up we take a look at exfoliators. Keeping your mouth flake-free makes all the difference for the staying power of your make-up. Believe it or not, it can even make you look younger!

“A great tip to try at home is to exfoliate your lips as well as the skin around them that shows tell-tale signs of ageing,” skincare maven Antonia Burrell told Cover Media. “It's important to exfoliate around the lips as massaging the skin will help to tone the muscle, preventing premature ageing.”

A homemade scrub takes no time to prepare so even the busiest bee must try this honey and lemon treat. Mix one teaspoon of olive oil or shea butter with one teaspoon of honey, one tablespoon of brown sugar and a dash of lemon juice. Not only does this taste delicious, but it will help to gently rub away the top layer of dead skin cells. Dip a soft bristle toothbrush into the scrub and work across your mouth in soft circular motions. Rinse off with warm water and apply your favourite lip balm afterwards for truly kissable lips. Aim to exfoliate your lips once a week to maintain a polished look.

Toothbrushes are a great way to eliminate any roughness on a daily basis. Gently brush your lips and skin around them while you are cleaning your teeth.

Cucumber is an impressive fix for cracked lips. Simply place slices on your mouth and hold them there while the water in the cucumber helps to replenish and sooth.

Now your mouth is super smooth make sure it’s always hydrated. Renowned facialist Katherine Jackson has a lip-smacking tinted balm that will ensure your pout is perfect. This nourishing moisturiser is also edible and you can add more berries if you want to increase the lip stain effect. Simply crush and sieve one blackberry and add two tablespoons of melted coconut butter. Continue to stir well until cool and set.

Finally, for an overnight treat, combine olive oil and honey then apply to your lips before bed. You’ll wake up with a noticeably softer smile.
