Coral, the colour for summer
Evoking summer festivals, pool parties and days at the beach, coral is a big trend for the warmer months. Whether it be a soft peach or brighter red-orange, coral hued make-up is both flattering and wearable. And with all the big cosmetics brands offering great coral tones for cheeks, eyes, lips and nails, there’s no better time to give this fun colour a whirl.
Coral works on all skin tones and is a great medium between red and pink lipsticks. And it also makes teeth look nice and white! Those with fair complexions should look for shades which have a peach base in order to get beautiful contrast with the skin. Dr Hauschka Lipstick 01 in Soft Coral has a lovely rosy tint and goes on with a pretty matte finish. While people with warmer skin tones should opt to bring out pretty golden tones. Try Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Defiant Coral, a rich orange-based coral which can be worn all year. But one of the most coveted corals has to be Tom Ford Lip Color in True Coral, not too orange and not too pink, its smooth formulation makes it well worth the splurge!
Drop those boring beige eyeshadows and mix-up your eye make-up with a pretty sweep of coral.
Coral shades can instantly open up the eyes, though its best to stick with one shade and keep the rest of your make-up minimal. L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow 034 in Pepsy Coral is a clay coloured shadow with plenty of shimmer and specks of gold which layers well. It takes a couple of layers over eye primer to impart a full colour payoff, but can also be used with a light hand for a subtle shine. Finish the look by rimming the lower lashline with a touch of brown eye pencil and lashings of Diorshow Blackout mascara.
A quick swipe of coral coloured blush is a great way to pull together a summer look without layering on lots of make-up. Achieve that tropical flush in seconds with Benefit’s warm CORALista Coral Blush, a pink-based blusher with hints of gold, or Diorblush’s Pink in Love. For the most natural effect, swirl brush in powder then blow off excess. Smile and sweep blush lightly across the apples of your cheeks, starting from your hairline and working in.
Perhaps the easiest way to try the trend is through a pretty coral hued manicure. Working well with pretty summer dresses, there are many fashion-forward hues to try at the moment. For instance,
Nails inc has some great coral nail polishes in their Gel Effect range, such as Kensington Palace, a universally flattering pink-based coral and Charlotte Villas, which is coral with an interesting deep terracotta feel. Apply two coats for a plumped up, salon-style glossy finish. Or get some serious attention with Red Carpet Manicure’s Until The Sun Sets, a true hot coral.
