Clay products for all your needs
Clays have been used for centuries as a natural agent to help beautify the skin as they perfectly absorb excess oils, dirt and harmful toxins. If you’re a spa junkie, you will no doubt have come across powdered clay which is used as the basis for face and body masks. Different clays target different issues, for instance if you have dry skin, a pink, white, yellow kaolin, or a rose clay will help you to retain moisture. Those with oily skin also have several choices including Bentonite, Red Kaolin or Multani Mitti. With the beauty industry fully embracing organic and natural products, brands are extending the use of powdered clays into across a variety of natural hair and beauty products. Here we round up our favourites which target, oily skin, detoxifying and cleansing your face and hair.
With our ever-polluted daily lives contributing to an increase in sebum of 56 per cent, adding clay to cosmetic products really makes sense. L’Oreal has followed in the footsteps of a number of independent brands by launching L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Clay Re-Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner, nicknamed The Turquoise Ones are a duo designed to attack the build-up of oil. The re-balancing shampoo is very cleansing and the conditioner is particularly hydrating. There’s also a clay based pre-shampoo mask and a dry shampoo in the range.
Clay is a no brainer for foundation that promises to keep your skin looking fresh and not shiny, without the dullness that plagues some oil-free formulations. Kaolinite takes a starring turn in Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation. It promises to absorb 75 percent of its weight in sebum without stripping skin of vital moisture so pimples don’t stand a chance. The foundation transforms skin to a long-lasting, soft velvet-matte texture that absorbs oil, and camouflages the appearance of imperfections.
Some concealers can leave you looking a little oiler after a while, but NUDESTIX concealer stick targets the oily T-zone with Amazonian clay to absorb facial sebum and oils and give a matte finish. It also contains salicylic acid which helps prevent acne breakouts and blemishes. Vitamins E and C soothe the skin, and jojoba seed oil works as a dry-oil moisturiser to improve the look of skin while leaving it moisturised with a matte finish.
Charlotte Tilbury’s Goddess Skin Clay Mask is a top pick for celebrities such as Kim Kardashian. The make-up artist turned cosmetic supremo has created a clay mask that promises both good skin and anti-ageing in one. It contains Spanish clay, and frangipani to hydrate and soften skin - and which also gives it a sweet, floral smell - plus rosehip oil to nourish, and Charlotte’s patented BioNymph Peptide Complex to plump the skin and give it "bounce." The result is soft, hydrated, plump, poreless skin – or – as it promises on the tube - “baby skin”.
Closely related to kaoline clay, white halloysite clay is great for cleaning skin. May Lindstrom's Honey Mud cleanser makes full use of its cleansing properties, blending it with raw honey, and aromatic pure plant oils to wash away the dirt, grime, and pollutants your skin has picked up during the day. With its chocolate pudding like constitution it’s a treat for the skin as well as the eyes and will soon become a highly addictive cleansing ritual. This mask is gentle enough for all skin types and can be used around the eye area.
