Channel your inner mermaid with this season’s smoky eye update

When it comes to beauty idols, mermaids don’t spring straight to mind. But actually, these mythical creatures are the inspiration for some of the season’s sexiest eye make-up. From Kendall Jenner to Emily Ratajkowski, the world’s hottest stars are giving this look a go – with stunning results.

This isn’t a look to try if you’re afraid of colour, as it’s all about using blues, turquoise and sea greens to achieve a picture-perfect finish.

With any bold eye look, it’s a good idea to start with a primer to ensure your liner and shadow stays in place for as long as you want it to. Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion is a cult classic, and it’s not hard to see why. Apply a small amount across the eyelid using your fingertip and blend in before you start the rest of your look.

Begin with a bold, aquamarine eyeliner to give you the basis for your mermaid eye. Marc Jacobs’ Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Top Secret is a good choice, or if you prefer a brush to a pencil, give Lorac Pro’s Metallic Cream Eyeliner in Aquamarine a try. Again, this look isn’t about subtlety so don’t be afraid to slick on the liner – the thicker the line, the better. Use your liner of choice to place a thick line across the upper lash line, and a narrower line on the bottom. Once you’ve achieved your perfect liner look, it’s time to add the shadow.

A palette is a good port of call for this look as many choices come with numerous hues to choose from. We would recommend Urban Decay’s Moondust eyeshadow palette for this look – with their Lightyear, Vega and Galaxy shades all perfect ways to channel your inner mermaid.

Start with the lighter shades and gently build using the darker colours, like a dark blue or blue-grey, using these hues to blend the colour into a cat-eye type flick at the side. Blending is so important with any eye look, but particularly with one that uses multiple colours, so don’t be afraid to set aside some extra time to get blending with your brush of choice.

If you really want to go all out with the mermaid eye, then add a spot of glitter on the inner eye. NYX Face & Body Glitter comes in a blue shade that’s perfect for this look. Use sparingly though, unless you want to look more Studio 54 than elegant and chic.

Once you’ve got your shadow the way you want it, use some black eyeliner to add some definition. A liquid eyeliner would be good in this instance, as a kohl might end up smudging all your hard work. Rosie for Autograph Liquid Eyeliner in Black is a good call. Apply a thin line on your upper lash line and don’t worry about blending in too much - this is just to add definition so only needs to be minimal.

Finally, finish your look with lashings of black mascara. Our favourite is Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Drama mascara in Very Black. Apply coat after coat until you’re happy, using an eyelash comb in between to prevent clumping. If you’re not so blessed in the eyelash department then invest in some false lashes to complete this sexy, mermaid look.
