Beauty trend: Cherry red

Krysten Ritter always steps out on the red carpet in edgy yet elegant ensembles.

Though at the recent New York premiere of Marvel’s The Defenders, it wasn’t just the actress’ red sequin Julien Macdonald dress that had fashionistas talking, but her perfect red lipstick too.

Krysten’s stunning cherry red pout was courtesy of Nick Barose, with the make-up artist sharing on Instagram that he used Lancome’s Color Design Matte Lip Crayon in Oui, Monsieur to create the look.

“If your dress is shiny, go matte with the lips and vice versa,” he noted of his lipstick choice in a post, adding, “I love pairing something ultra-feminine like bold red mouth with something androgynous like full, straight, no arches boyish brows, the balance help keeping it from going overboard.”

Keen to give the season’s best red hues a whirl? Here’s some top options.

Lipstick

When it comes to lipstick, red is the ultimate hue. To recreate Krysten’s look, those with fair skintones could look to try Mary Kay Gel Semi-Shine Lipstick in Red Smolder, a long-lasting blue-based red. This product features a lightweight gel formula, which glides on smoothly and cushions lips. While Tom Ford Lip Color in Cherry Lush is a dramatic rouge – particularly flattering for those with golden and dark complexions. It’s made with specially treated pigments and soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil for a creamy texture. Illamasqua’s Lipstick in Maneater is a classic cherry red as well, with a great matte feel for a flawless, perfect all-night pout.

Lip glosses

Not sure about wearing a full-on cherry red lipstick? Think about trying the trend with a glossier option. Liz Earle’s Sheer Lip Gloss in Cherry 01 is a lovely glaze which gives lips a hint of red, and enhances natural colour. Or sweep the pout with Maybelline’s Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss in So Hot, a saturated hue with a high-shine finish – the teardrop-shaped wand makes for simple application too.

Though if you prefer to use lip crayons over glosses, Laura Geller’s Love Me Dew Lip Crayon in Cranberry Glaze is a great choice, as it gives a perfectly rich layer of pigment which is perfect for touch-ups on the go.
