Rory McIlroy was not at his best on the opening day of The Masters at Augusta, but he limited the damage to his hopes of winning his first green jacket by posting a one-under par round of 71.

Seeking to become just the sixth player in history to win all four major titles, McIlroy was one over par after 11 holes before recording birdies on the 13th and 15th to drag himself to an under-par score.

"I just kept telling myself to be patient out there today," McIlroy said. "It was a tricky day, the wind was swirling a little bit, the pin positions were tough.

"Anything under par was a pretty good score. It was nice to pick off a couple of birdies on the back nine on the par fives and I'm pretty satisfied with the day's work."

Jordan Spieth led the way after the first round as his stunning round of 64 left him out in front on eight under, with Tiger Woods making a promising start on his latest comeback as he played encouraging well to post a one over par total of 73.

Of the other Irish challengers, Graeme McDowell joined McIlroy at one under, while Padraig Harrington was just one shot further back.

Darren Clarke hit a two over par 74 and Shane Lowry was one shot worse, with both facing a battle to make the cut on Friday.
