UFC set to announce McGregor v Diaz rematch
Reports emanating from Las Vegas are suggesting that the promotion will book a welterweight non-title showdown between McGregor and Diaz for UFC 200.
MMAFighting.com has been informed by numerous sources that the bout will serve as the main event for UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas.
Of course, earlier this month at UFC 196 Diaz, who stepped in as a late replacement for lightweight champion Rafael Ds Anjos, handed McGregor the first loss of his UFC career when submitting him via second round rear naked choke.
McGregor had been heavily favoured to quickly dispatch of the perennial contender, who has fought all but four of his 22 UFC bouts at lightweight, but the Dubliner tired quickly after a dominant first round before Diaz secured the blockbuster victory.
McGregor had agreed to face Diaz at welterweight in order to secure his participation in the main event contest, which is said to have drawn in excess of one million pay-per-view buys. Many thought, including the SBG man and his camp, that the extra mass on his frame would be beneficial but, ultimately, it may have cost him the fight.
Which is what makes this potential rematch so intriguing; McGregor revealed in the aftermath of his first loss in close to six years that his next move would be to defend his featherweight crown against Jose Aldo or Frankie Edgar.
UFC 200, which will be held in the T-Mobile Arena, is set to be the promotion’s biggest ever showcase and may feature up to three title fights.
