Conor McGregor set for billion-dollar showdown with Floyd Mayweather – report

The Notorious could be part of what would be boxing's richest-ever fight this summer.

As the curtain closes on Conor McGregor's proposed UFC 200 rematch with Nate Diaz, another fight opportunity apparently beckons.

The Sun reports that McGregor could face off in the boxing ring against Floyd 'Money' Mayweather this summer.

Mayweather's record in the ring – 49 wins in 49 bouts – speaks for itself.

The currently-retired American fighter would reportedly earn almost €127million from the superfight, while it is estimated that McGregor would reap just shy of €9million.

Sources tell the Sun that the bout is likely to be announced in the next few weeks, once each party agrees on the fight purse.

Apparently, Mayweather is the catalyst behind the fight after McGregor's famed trash talk angered the boxer.

"Floyd went mad after Conor said he would crush him and knock him out in 30 seconds, he's obsessed with making Conor eat his words," a source told the Sun.

"Floyd is calling the shots. It's strictly boxing and Conor will have to lose roughly 25 pounds.

"It was agreed in principle on May 2, but Floyd wouldn't reveal the identity of his opponent until last night when he told friends he'll be fighting Conor."

Mayweather previously stated his annoyance at the media billing McGregor receives for his trash-talking exploits while the undefeated boxer sees himself as being regarded as "cocky and arrogant".

The Notorious, not one to shy away from publicity himself, recently told BT Sport that he wants the "billion-dollar fight" against Money Mayweather but that he "holds the key to the fight game".

The pot was really stirred when the Dubliner suggested last month that he would knock Mayweather out within 30 seconds – the statement which has apparently got him the fight he craves.

However, with the undefeated Mayweather set to earn over 14 times what the Crumlin man would get if the fight goes ahead, it seems that there will be a lot of negotiating to be done if there's any chance of seeing these two fighting icons square off.
