Conor McGregor is guaranteed a record fee for tonight's fight
Conor McGregor will become the first UFC fighter to be paid $1m to fight when he enters the octagon to take on Nate Diaz tonight in Las Vegas.
Their clash at UFC196 tonight is eagerly anticipated but regardless of the result, the fact that one of the fighters is getting a seven-figure purse fee marks a new standard in the promotion's 20-year history.
The purses were released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission last night.
McGregor will scoop many millions for tonight's fight thanks to his cut of pay-per-views but it is the fee of $1m just for fighting that is record breaking.
For his last bout, against Jose Aldo in December, McGregor's purse was $500,000, while the Brazilian's was $400,000.
In the end it was estimated Notorious earned over $7m for his 13 second KO of Aldo.
Diaz' purse tonight is $500,000.
What fighters ultimately get paid is often shrouded in mystery and McGregor's final pay-day, including purse, pay-per-view, sponsorships and potential bonuses on the night will in all likelihood never be released.
However, the man himself said this week he would 'breeze past' $10m for his fight tonight and UFC supremo Dana White has said that UFC196 is on course to be one of the promotion's highest grossing cards ever.
