Top baseball player dies in tragic boating accident
Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez has died at the age of 24.
The Major League Baseball franchise announced Fernandez's death in a short statement, and the US Coast Guard confirmed shortly afterwards that he had been involved in a boating accident near Miami Beach.
"The Miami Marlins organisation is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," the statement read. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."
The Marlins cancelled Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves as a consequence.
Born in Cuba, Fernandez made his MLB debut in 2013 and went on to establish himself as one of the league's leading pitchers.
