Manchester United appeared to be closing in on the signing of Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne, but a twist in this transfer story may now see the England defender sign a new deal with his club.

Southampton Sporting Director Les Reed has confirmed that Clyne's decision to change his agent has transformed the narrative in this transfer story, with his confidence in keeping the 23-year-old full-back now high.

“With Clyney, we have been talking for quite a while,” Reed told the Southampton YouTube channel.

“It gets fed by speculation that doesn’t help, but Ronald made a comment a couple of weeks ago to say there was a deadline set for him.

“That deadline was more about getting a response and that issue has been solved by Nathaniel changing his agent. We got an immediate response from his new agent. That [decision to change agents] is not our business, but there is something there that was slowing things down a little bit.

“I am now in discussion with his agent and those have been very, very positive. There is bound to be a lot of speculation because Nathaniel is such a good player and he has had such a good season.

“We have to balance that up with what he can do for us in the future and what we can do for him.

"We are at a very good place at the moment in terms of discussion going on and I’m confident we will have a resolution to that sooner rather than later.”

Check out what Reed had to say about Clyne's future at the back end of a video clip that also sees him reflect on Southampton's success in securing the services of striker Jay Rodriguez on a new contract earlier this week.
