WATCH - De Gea takes top prize at Man Utd awards
David de Gea has been crowned as Manchester United's Player of the Year at a lavish awards ceremony in Manchester - but the trophy he received may soon be viewed as a parting gift.
De Gea is widely expected to join Real Madrid in the coming weeks, with talks over his move to the Spanish capital already believed to be underway between the two clubs.
However, those rumours were put on hold for this evening at last, as De Gea collected his prize following a sparkling season of form between the sticks for United.
Meanwhile, Juan Mata's classy strike against Liverpool at Anfield in March was named as the club's Goal of the Season.
= United boss Louis van Gaal did not offer any more comments on De Gea's future as he addressed the assembled audience at the awards ceremony, but he did hint that he is planning to make changes to his squad this summer.
“It shall be a rough summer for a lot of players, but I think a top club like Manchester United has to do that,” Van Gaal stated.
“I think our selection is unbalanced. We have managed to be fourth in the league, but we have to manage to be the champions.
“I don’t think you have to keep the whole selection [squad], because when you purchase other players, you get another stimulus in the group also, and that you need.
“That is why we have to take care of the balance of the selection, but also to improve our selection, because we want to be champions.
“I can promise I can do my utmost best, that we shall fight to the end and more we cannot do.
"And that we make the right decisions when you purchase players and when players are leaving the club.”
The future of Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans is among those believed to be under consideration, while Robin van Persie and on loan striker Radamel Falcao are also expected to leave United.
