As Paul Scholes celebrated his 41st birthday on Monday, the Premier League's Twitter feed threw out a suggestion that he may have been the greatest midfielder to grace their competition.
With 11 Premier League titles to his credit, three FA Cups, a couple of League Cup wins and two triumphs in his Champions League his magnificent record, Scholes certainly deserves a mention when the greatest midfielders of this era are discussed.
Yet when he better than his his former Man Utd team-mates Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs, or a step ahead of Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, more efficient than Chelsea great Frank Lampard or Arsenal hero Patrick Vieira?
Scholes had admirers across Europe, with Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and Italian maestro Andrea Pirlo among those who have hailed his qualities and yet many will suggest he does not quite deserve top billing when all the great midfielders of the last 23 years are considered.
