Louis van Gaal's transfer policy has come under scrutiny after his side's premature Champions League exit - and the verdict does not look good for the Manchester United manager.

BT Sport pundits Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen have looked back on Van Gaal's reign at Old Trafford and they are not impressed with the way he has shaped his squad.

As they threw around the names of the players Van Gaal has opted to off-load since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2014, they argued the team left behind are not as good.

It was hard to disagree on a night when a poor United side lost 3-2 to Wolfsburg and crashed out of the Champions League, with this talking point sure to get tongues wagging.

Meanwhile, former Man Utd keeper Peter Schmeichel offered up this damning view on the United display.
