Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted he was forced to start with teenage striker Anthony Martial in his side's Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven.

Van Gaal has been doing his best to dampen down the hype around Martial after his £36m deadline day signing scored a wonder goal against Liverpool on his Old Trafford debut on Saturday.

The United boss may not have started the French forward if skipper Wayne Rooney was fit, but he told BT Sport that he had limited options for the game against the Dutch champions.

Meanwhile, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Martial has added an extra dimension to the Van Gaal's forward line following his expensive arrival at Old Trafford.
