Video - Sadio Mane a shock target for Man Utd?
On the day when Manchester United claimed they were no longer interested in signing Barcelona forward Pedro, the Old Trafford club have been linked with a shock move for Southampton striker Sadio Mane.
United's claims that they 'decided' not to pursue their interest in Pedro came after it was confirmed he had a agreed a deal to join Chelsea, with the confused reaction on twitter summing up lack of clarity over a transfer story that has rumbled on for several weeks.
The Old Trafford club's refusal to pay the €30m asking price for Pedro left some United fans to conclude boss Louis van Gaal never wanted to sign him in the first place, while others suggested the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had botched yet another transfer deal.
Ed Woodward flying out to Barcelona to tie up the Pedro deal seems to have worked a treat— Oliver Holt (@OllieHolt22) August 19, 2015
So according to Man Utd fans, Ed Woodward flew to Spain to tell Barcelona they are not interested in signing Pedro? Lol really?— Mr.BlueGuy (@MrBIueGuy) August 19, 2015
First Ramos, then Otamendi, now Pedro. What started positively for Ed Woodward & Man Utd this summer is starting to descend into farce.— Sam Lyon (@sampatricklyon) August 19, 2015
Whatever the truth may be behind Pedro's move, the Daily Telegraph story that United have now turned their attentions to 23-year-old Saints striker Mane has added to the mystery surrounding their transfer policy.
While Mane had a decent first season in English football as he scored 10 Premier League goals - including the fastest Premier League hat-trick (below) - he is hardly the marquee forward United fans had been hoping to see arrive at Old Trafford.
Rejecting the chance to sign a Spanish World Cup winner and instead targeting an unheralded Senegalese striker would appear to be a curious move by United, but anything is possible in this unpredictable transfer window.
