Video: Robbie Keane belts out stirring Fields of Athenry rendition at retirement party
When he hangs up his boots at club level, there may well be a career in ballad singing for former Ireland captain Robbie Keane.
The Tallaght man is well-known to like a song so it was fitting that he stole the show at his international retirement party on Wednesday night when he belted out a passionate version of the Fields Of Athenry.
Robbie joined former You're A Star contestant George Murphy - famed for his classic Luke Kelly tributes - and Roy Buckley on stage to perform Pete St John's classic that has been the anthem for Ireland fans for many years.
Indeed Keane revealed after his final game for Ireland - the 4-0 win over Oman on Wednesday night when he scored the quality second goal - that he is now looking forward to watching Ireland matches with the fans in the stands.
"And to the best fans in the world I just want to say thank you very much and I wish you well," said Keane.
"It was very tough (emotionally) but it is what it is and I'm just happy with this reception, I'm delighted with everybody and now I look forward to sitting back and watching as a fan going forward."
Keane's musical talent is a family trait and his late father Robbie Senior played in a band for years.
