Real Madrid are facing up to an embarrassing exit from the Spanish Cup, after they fielded an ineligible player in Wednesday night's game against Cadiz.

Russian winger Denis Cheryshev started the game for Real Madrid, as manager Rafael Benitez gave some of his fringe players a run out in the cup tie.

Yet it has transpired that Cheryshev should have been serving a one-match suspension after he picked up three yellow cards while playing for Villarreal last season.

With Twitter flooded with suggestions that Real Madrid had made a huge error, Cadiz fans started celebrating as they now look certain to be handed a bye through to the next round.

This was the comical reaction of Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who was clearly happy to have a chuckle at Real Madrid's expense.
