Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson told US Masters champions Danny Willett that he cost him a massive £8,000 on Sunday - but he was delighted to part with his cash in a failed bet.

Ferguson had thrown a huge sum on Jordan Spieth to win his second successive Masters jacket at Augusta, but a collapse from the American when he appeared to have the title in his grasp allowed unheralded Englishman Willett to snatch his first major title.

A clearly delighted Ferguson greeted the new champion with a warm smile and the announcement that he was “delighted” to lose his bet as Willett sealed his dramatic victory.

It is safe to safe Ferguson is one of the few people who had a hefty bet on this year’s Masters who could brush off the loss of such a huge amount of cash as a bad day at the office.
