Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has offered up a less than convincing argument to suggest his club record signing Angel Di Maria will remain at the club next season.

Van Gaal admitted that Di Maria has been a disappointment since his £59.7m move from Real Madrid last summer, with Paris Saint-Germain believed to be preparing a bid to bring the Argentine winger to the French capital this summer.

Di Maria has spent much of the last few weeks warming the United bench, with Van Gaal suggesting the player will be offered the chance to decide on his own future when this season comes to an end.

"The manager and the club is always dependable on the opinion of the player himself," said Van Gaal. "The player decides. We shall see what he decides.

"The decision is not only to him because now we have a contract, so we shall speak always with every player - evaluation, as I always do.

"Then we speak with each other about the future, and that is with every player. I think Di Maria shall stay."

Van Gaal went on to suggest he has felt let down by Di Maria's contribution since his move to United, as he claimed the club's No.7 has not lived up to his billing so far.

"He cannot say that he has had a marvellous season here," added Van Gaal.

"Normally Di Maria should have played, but the last weeks he doesn't play any more and the team is winning.

"The issue that he is not always in the line-up is for him a disappointment, but also for me a disappointment."
