Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that his club are in "in the process" of signing a new striker ahead of the new season.

Senior sources at United briefed the media last weekend to state that the club were not interested in signing a new front man after United's 1-0 win over Club America at the weekend, but now Van Gaal hinted those prompts were misleading.

"He is in the process," Van Gaal said bluntly when asked about his "surprise" signing.

When asked whether United were close to signing the a striker that has been linked with United in recent weeks, Van Gaal said: "No. It is not a striker that the media has written, but you have to wait and see.

"The transfer period is open until September 1. You have to wait."

Paris St Germain Edinson Cavani, Tottenham's Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich have all been linked with a move to United, while a report in Germany claimed the Premier League club have made a €100m bid for Bayern's Thomas Muller. That was denied by the Old Trafford club.

Van Gaal was also asked about his ongoing bid to sign defender Sergio Ramos from Manchester United, as he offered this intriguing comment.

"I cannot talk about these rumours," said the United boss. "I have said already it's a process and maybe Mr Ramos is in the process, you never know."

Meanwhile, Van Gaal has claimed summer signing Matteo Darmian is not assured of a place in his team this season, as he is behind Antonio Valencia in a battle to secure the right-back berth.

"We have brought Darmian for the second position behind Valencia and now already because of that injury (Paddy) McNair has to play there," added Van Gaal, as he met the media ahead of United's game against San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday night.

There was also a wonderful moment in Van Gaal's press briefing, as he proudly introduced his defender Chris Smalling as....Mr Mike Smalling:
