Valencia are reported to have made Jose Mourinho a top target after they decided to sack head coach Gary Neville following his turbulent spell in charge.

Mourinho is an acquaintance of Valencia owner Peter Lim and was strongly linked with a move to the Mestalla Stadium before Neville became a surprise choice to take over at the Spanish giants last December.

With Neville's disastrous reign as head coach now over, Mourinho's name is again being linked with the Valencia post in the UK and Spanish media, despite reports that he is close to agreeing a deal to take over as Manchester United boss this summer.

There were expectations that Neville's stay at Valencia was always likely to come to an end this May, with Mourinho identified as the 'dream' candidate for Lim and his under pressure board.

Now the need to make the right appointment is more pressing than ever, with Mourinho the kind of name who would excite the club's irate supporters.

Former Valencia favourite Rafael Bentiez may be available to make a return to his former club this summer if he fails to save Newcastle from Premier League relegation, with outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini also being linked with the post.

Mourinho may face a dilemma if he was offered the Valencia job in the coming days as he has yet to agree a deal to succeed Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer, even though there is a growing expectation that the current United boss will not remain in his post for next season.
