Romelu Lukaku's Man United move announced...or maybe not
Former Manchester United and Everton defender Phil Neville has published a photoshopped picture of Romelu Lukaku in a United shirt and welcomed him to the club, in a post that has led many to believe the one of the transfer deals of the summer is about to be announced.
Neville’s post of Lukaku - that he confirmed was in jest - was complimented with a message that reads: Left one great club and joined another @rlukaku9 congratulations.
Confusion has surrounded United’s reported £75m deal for Lukaku throughout Friday, with the striker in Los Angeles awaiting developments ahead of what he hopes will be a meet-up with his new team-mates when they fly to America on Sunday.
Reports initially broke on Thursday morning suggesting Old Trafford chiefs had agreed a £75m deal to sign Belgian striker Lukaku, with subsequent stories suggesting he would complete a United medical in Los Angeles.
Yet Independent.ie have been informed that United’s offer for Lukaku is still some way short of Everton's valuation, with the initial offer not containing enough guaranteed money to satisfy Goodison Park chiefs.
Sky Sports are reporting that Everton will demand as much as £90m to agree to a sale, with their desire to secure a cash fee regardless of Lukaku’s success at United now the chief stumbling block in negotiations.
Everton officials expect to reach a deal to sell Lukaku to United imminently, with our sources telling is that Chelsea’s offers for the player fell well short of the figure United have been discussing in recent days.
Everton officials have also confirmed that a deal to bring Wayne Rooney back to the club 13 years after he left United will be finalised in the coming days, with official confirmation on Lukaku’s move to Manchester likely to come at the same time as an announcement of Rooney’s return to Goodison Park.
