Two punters net huge wedge of cash thanks to Lukaku goals
The goal-scoring exploits of Romelu Lukaku last night were not just good for Everton, they also made two punters some serious cash.
Two Paddy Power customers had entered the bookie's Hotshot Jackpot, where eight any-time Premier League goalscorers have to be named for the weekend.
With £325,000 (€384k) available for anyone who managed the feat, two punters just needed the Everton striker to score against Sunderland last night to win close to €200k each.
Sure enough, the Belgian big man did the business, scoring in the 60th minute to send two gamblers into ecstasy.
According to the bookie one of the winners, a guy called Darrell who works in the airforce and lives in Lincoln, demanded to speak to Paddy Power himself to certify his fortune.
He said: “I thought you were winding me up. I couldn’t even tell you who I picked for the scorers – I just did my picks and then forgot all about it.
“So I wasn’t even watching the Everton game last night, let alone stressing about it.
“I’ve just had a baby girl, so I was probably changing her nappy when Lukaku scored!
“I might have to name her Romelu now.
“I have no idea how I’m going to tell my other half – she’ll think it’s a joke, too. But this money means we can buy a house together.”
The other winner, a Scottish man named David, revealed he was on a flight to Spain during the game, landing at half-time just in time to see the vital goal, which Lukaku then followed up with two more for good measure.
David correctly selected: Callum Wilson, Dele Alli, Christian Benteke, Santi Cazorla, Jamie Vardy, Diego Costa, Troy Deeney, Romelu Lukaku.
Paddy Power caught up with the overjoyed punter this morning, and he said:
“I still can’t believe it, it’s a dream start to my holiday and despite being a Manchester United fan I’ll love Lukaku forever after this.
“Me and the missus have already started thinking about what we’ll spend the money on and it looks like a Vegas wedding and paying off the mortgage are top of the list – it’s a dream come true.”
Spokesman Paddy Power said: “These two are right lucky punts. But that’s the name of the game – looking at the players each of our winners have picked, you’d think it was easy.
“I’m sure David’s winnings will buy him a few San Miguel’s down in Spain. And enough to hire a German to reserve him a sun lounger each morning.
“Seriously, though, congratulations gents – well done.
“I look forward to crowning another winner next weekend, when the jackpot is reset to £250,000.”
