Manchester United showed real signs of promise as they recorded a thrilling 3-2 win against Southampton, yet the performance of skipper Wayne Rooney was giving a hammering once again.

Rooney made his return to the United line-up after a spell in the treatment room, but the striker who has scored 233 goals for the Old Trafford club barely made a contribution to their win at St Mary's Stadium.

Two classy goals from new hero Anthony Martial and a clincher from Juan Mata handed United the win they craved as they moved up to second place in the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Yet while there were so many positives for Van Gaal and his team, Rooney's muted display in a reserved role sparked a swift reaction on Twitter, as he played out his 11th Premier League game without a goal.

While the abuse was flowing for Rooney, his possible successor as United's lead striker was taking all the plaudits, with Martial impressing once more.
