Twitter abuse directed at Wayne Rooney is getting cruel
Another Manchester United start for Wayne Rooney was followed by the now inevitable flow of abuse directed at the club skipper from the club's supporters on Twitter.
Rooney turned in another less than convincing display as United beat Northampton 3-1 in the EFL Cup, setting up an enticing fourth round clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
While the win was welcome for United after a run of three successive defeats, Rooney's display in a lead striker's role was the subject of what is becoming increasingly nasty abuse on Twitter.
Rooney's first touch is like Brad and Angelina, no longer there.— Aryan (@theunitedmanc) September 21, 2016
I hope Rooney is Left Back on Saturday. Left back on the bench.— Lisa Johnson (@girlmanutd) September 21, 2016
I struggle to fathom how some pundits and fans can genuinely argue that Rooney deserves to start. HOW. Stop lying to yourself.— Liam Canning (@LiamPaulCanning) September 21, 2016
Rooney pal.. go home after the game, put your slippers on and relax. This is all too much for you. Don't need this stress anymore.— Hayley B (@Hayles_101) September 21, 2016
Genuinely believe I have a better first touch than Wayne Rooney.— OldTraffordFaithful (@OTFaithful) September 21, 2016
A fullback comes off and Rooney stays on. Oh hello Louis long time no see.— Keith Russell (@Keith_Russell) September 21, 2016
Rooney gets paid 300K p/w while I'm here struggling to make ends meet. It's mad we basically do the same thing except he wears an armband.— . (@ScoobyDubieDooo) September 21, 2016
The next stage of this increasingly unpleasant Rooney saga will be played out this weekend, as he is likely to start in United's vital Premier League game against champions Leicester at Old Trafford.
If his current form continues, it cannot be long before Mourinho decides to give Rooney "a rest" at the very least, with the steady erosion of his United legacy an unfortunate sideshow of his fall from grace.
