Tottenham to make a move for James McCarthy
There is plenty of smoke without fire as transfer rumours come and go, but it seems like there may be more than a semblance of truth in Tottenham's interest in Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy.
As stories suggesting McCarthy is unhappy with Everton's delay in opening new contract talks are backed up by continuing links with Tottenham, a bid from the North London club for the 24-year-old midfielder seems to be imminent.
The latest reports suggest Tottenham are set to offer Aaron Lennon as part of a deal that will see McCarthy swap Merseyside for London, with Everton keen to sign the winger who spent a spell on loan at Goodison Park last season.
Tottenham freed up space in their midfielder roster by selling Etienne Capoue to Watford on Monday and they have also off-loaded Lewis Holtby this summer. There are also suggestions that Mousa Dembele will be the next midfielder to be ushered out of the club.
That would make room for McCarthy to become a kingpin of Mauricio Pochettino's midfield at Spurs next season and we can only assume his admiration for the high energy midfielder has been formed after watching his displays in the Premier League.
If his woeful performances for the Republic of Ireland in the Euro 2016 qualifiers were being used a guideline for his abilities, there is a fair chance that bids from Championship sides may be more likely for McCarthy!
