Benfica have said their farewells to defender Victor Lindelof as he prepares to fly to England on Wednesday to complete his move to Manchester United.

After months of speculation linking the Swedish centre-back with a switch to United, the club confirmed they had reached an agreement with Benfica over a deal worth around £31m on Saturday.

The Portuguese club issued a Twitter message wishing Lindelof well and offering up a video of some of his best moments at the club and now the stage is set for him to arrive in Manchester to complete the formalities of the deal.

Lindelof is involved in Sweden’s friendly international against Norway on Tuesday night and if expected to fly straight to Manchester after the game, where he will undergo a medical before the official confirmation of his arrival comes from the Old Trafford club.

The news of Lindelof’s arrival appears to have affected United’s pursuit of Burnley defender Michael Keane, amid widespread reports that the Englishman will not be re-joining his former club after all.

Keane was tipped to complete a return to United after a successful spell at Burnley, but he is keen to move to a club where he will play regular first team football and Lindelof’s move to United suggests he will be a first choice centre-back for boss Jose Mourinho next season.

Lindelof is expected to be the first of several high profile signings made by United boss Mourinho this summer, with Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata on course to be his next major arrival as talks over a deal in excess of £60m continue between the two clubs.

Morata’s agent has confirmed that talks over a move to AC Milan for his client have failed to reach a conclusion, with United now the only offer on the table for a striker who is ready to leave Real Madrid in the search of first team football.
