Manchester United transfer target Thomas Muller has agreed a new contract to remain with Bayern Munich, according to reports in Germany.

United made lavish bids to sign World Cup winner Muller in the summer of 2014 and again ahead of the start of this season, but Bayern refused to sell one of their prized assets on both occasions.

Muller's public comments that he may be tempted to make a move to England's Premier League fuelled belief that he may be eyeing up a move to United, but that appears to have been scuppered following this morning's news from Germany.

The new deal Muller is close to signing with Bayern will see him remain with the Bavarian giants until 2021, with a bumper pay rise part of the deal according to broadcaster Sport 1.

This is a familiar end to a Manchester United transfer rumour, with the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward trying and failing to sign some of the world's top stars in the last couple of years.

All to often, his pursuit tends to finish with his transfer target signing a new contract with their current employer, with his moves to sign Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos last summer an example of that script.

Now Muller can be crossed off the United wanted list and there are suggestions in Spain that Barcelona forward Neymar may soon pen a new contract with the Catalan club, after he was also linked with a move to Old Trafford back in August.
