Surprise for Manchester United fans as Jose Mourinho reportedly set to keep midfielder
Juan Mata may still be a Manchester United player following the close of the transfer window, according to a report.
Ever since Jose Mourinho was appointed as Man United manager, it was assumed that Juan Mata had no future at Old Trafford.
When Zlatan Ibrahimovic was signed, he allegedly stated that Mata's number 8 shirt would become his, though those reports were quickly quashed.
Photos appeared online of the Spaniard in Liverpool as it became apparent that Everton were interested in securing the playmaker's services.
Now, however, the Daily Mail are reporting that the diminutive midfielder will be given a chance to prove himself under the Mourinho regime.
Mata was sold by the Portuguese during the pair's Chelsea days, for a figure thought to be around £37million.
The suggested figure for Mata's possible move to Ronald Koeman's Toffees was £20million, which would represent a significant loss for the Manchester outfit.
Furthermore, the Spain international's hefty wages could prove a stumbling block in negotiations with any clubs that have an eye on their salary bill.
It is also thought that the much-maligned Marouane Fellaini will be retained at Old Trafford, with Mourinho said to admire the Belgium midfielder's aggressive nature.
Dutchman Daley Blind's versatility could also save his United career.
The trio, along with Argentina full-back Marcos Rojo, were all recently reported to be in danger of being pushed out the club's exit door following Mourinho's initial assessment of his squad.
