Roy Keane believes his former Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has earned the right to go down in history as one of the game’s all-time greats.

Hailing the Portuguese superstar as ‘a genius’ as he gave his verdict on his latest hat-trick that fired Real Madrid to a Champions League quarter-final win against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, Keane didn’t hold back as he poured praise on the 32-year-old forward.

“The guy is a genius, it’s a simple as that,” declared Keane on ITV, as he reflected on Ronaldo’s 41st hat-trick for Real Madrid that set-up a 6-3 aggregate victory.

“You are talking about one of the greatest players ever to play this game. He is a joy to watch.

“We keep talking about how hard it is to score goals. You look at his stats every season…the goals, the assist, the guy is a genius.”

Keane also gave his views on the introduction of video replays to assist match officials, after a series of high profile errors cost Bayern Munich in their two games with Real Madrid.

Red cards were brandished in both games to Bayern players and Ronaldo should have been flagged for off-side decisions on two of his goals in the second leg at the Bernabeu.

Yet Ireland assistant manager Keane is still not convinced that referees should be allowed to turn to video replays for close decisions.

“I’m not so sure about it, I have to be honest with you,” Keane stated, as he was asked for his views on the VAR referral system that is currently being tested ahead of its introduction to the game.

“I like the element of human error in it and you hope that in the big game, the officials will get it right.”
