Roy Keane accuses Jose Mourinho of being "very irritating"
Manchester United legend Roy Keane believes Old Trafford chiefs had little option other than to hire Jose Mourinho as the club’s new manager, even though he admits he finds the former Chelsea manager “very irritating”.
Keane lashed out at the Portuguese tactician after he left the bench early and tried to shake his hand during his time as Aston Villa assistant manager, with the Irishman angrily rebuffing the unwanted gesture from the Mourinho in September 2014.
While the Republic of Ireland assistant boss is still clearly lacking in respect for Mourinho’s behaviour, he accepts his former club made the right call when they hired him to replace Louis van Gaal.
“He was always going to be a good option when United didn’t qualify for the Champions League,” Keane told ITV Sport. “He was available, fantastic CV and it seems like a good fit, but maybe he is not for me.
“He is not my cup of tea. I found him really irritating when I coached against him, but that is just a personal thing, but working at Man Utd is all about winning and his CV will tell you he is a winner.”
Keane also backed United’s moves to sign striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, after it was confirmed the veteran Swedish forward has been offered a deal to move to Old Trafford and renew a successful partnership he enjoyed with Mourinho during their time together with Inter Milan.
“I think he would be a good signing on a one year deal,” said Keane of the striker his Republic of Ireland side will face at the Euro 2016 finals.
“He is a big player, a big character. I have said that United have been lacking a few characters and he would be a good fit there.”
