Manchester United crashed out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of Championship side Middlesbrough, on what proved to be another miserable night for their skipper Wayne Rooney.

After the tie finished 0-0 after 120 minutes of action that featured a host of chances for both sides, a penalty shoot-out was required to resolve the final place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

England haven't had too much luck in penalty shoot-outs down the years and their three homegrown stars were the guilty men from the spot, as Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young failed from 12 yards to hand Middlesbrough a famous victory at Old Trafford.
