Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed club record signing Angel Di Maria to bounce back to form after was roundly criticised and taken off by boss Louis van Gaal on Saturday.

Van Gaal admitted £59.7m signing Di Maria is struggling to adapt to the pace of English soccer, but Rooney stressed his Argentine team-mate would soon be influencing games once again.

"He's a great player. You don't lose your talent overnight. I think he will figure it out," stated Rooney.

"Hopefully he'll get back to his best and start giving some great performances.

"You have to come to it in your own way and I am sure he will be a big player for us between now and the end of the season."

United will hope Di Maria emerges from his slumber when they travel to face Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
