Brendan Rodgers has ruled out taking over as Swansea manager, paving the way for David Moyes to make a return to the Premier League following the sacking of Garry Monk.

Rodgers is believed to have been approached by Swansea to return to the job he left to take over at Liverpool in 2012, but the South Wales Evening Post have confirmed that he feels the time is not right to make a return.

That could see Moyes promoted as the favourite to take the job at the Liberty Stadium, with the Scot keen to get back into the Premier League after a disastrous spell as manager of Manchester United was followed by a poor stint in charge of Spanish side Real Sociedad.

Monk has been under pressure for several weeks, with Swansea's results taking a dip amid talk of dressing room unrest and the Welsh club confirmed his departure a few days after the club lost 3-0 at home to Premier League leaders Leicester.

Monk took training as usual with the team on Tuesday, but his departure from the Liberty Stadium had been widely expected ahead of next Saturday's trip to Manchester City.

Reflecting on Monk's exit, Jenkins told the Swansea City website: "The decision has been made very reluctantly and with a heavy heart.

"To find ourselves in our current situation from where we were in the first week of September, and considering the drop of performance levels and run of results over the last three months, it has brought us to this unfortunate decision today.

"Garry took on the job 22 months ago with the backing of everyone at the club.

"And when you take into account the excellent campaign we had last season when we broke all club records in the Premier League, nobody foresaw the position we would be in at this moment in time.

"Bearing that in mind, and the current uncertainty around the club, we felt the situation needed clarity to move forward.

"It was not a decision we took lightly, especially given Garry's history and standing within the club."

Moyes and ex-Sunderland boss Gus Poyet have also been mentioned as possible replacements for Monk, with these updated odds reflecting the news that Rodgers is not keen on an quick return.
