Report: Van Gaal faces summer axe, Mourinho lined up as replacement
A report suggests that Manchester United will sack Louis van Gaal at the end of the season, with Jose Mourinho touted to take over from the Dutchman.
The Star suggests that Manchester City’s appointment of Pep Guardiola has forced United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward into making the decision.
The United board is already split on the decision of making Mourinho the club’s next boss.
However, the Star claims that Woodward feels that only Mourinho can match the winning power of Pep Guardiola.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager is well known to be interested in taking over at Old Trafford, while he has been the bookies’ favourite to replace Van Gaal since his sacking as Chelsea boss in December.
Will Louis van Gaal be getting his P45 this summer?
Van Gaal has another year to run on his contract once this season finishes, but allegedly offered his resignation over Christmas.
United take on Stoke this evening at Old Trafford, in another fixture which will cast the spotlight directly on the under-pressure Dutchman as his team attempt to claw back the five-point gap separating them from the Champions League spots.
