Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane was linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer transfer window and now he has confirmed that he turned down an approach from the Old Trafford giants.

Varane worked with Mourinho during his time in charge at Real Madrid and he was one of numerous defensive targets on the United wanted list, with Eric Bailly the only central defensive option added to the club’s squad before the close of the transfer window.

Now Varane has opened up on the approach from United, as he confirmed he was “flattered” by the approaches from United, before insisting the lure of staying at Real Madrid convinced him to stay.

“Manchester United are a very big club, but from the moment Madrid and I are in sync on my project, there's no questions to ask yourself,” he told Canal+

“I have always said I feel good in Madrid. It is not easy to say no to Jose Mourinho but you have to weigh up the pros and the cons. We're men, we have decisions to make and that's how it is.”

United also made moves to sign Southampton captain Jose Fonte, but the Portuguese Euro 2016 winner saw his hopes of a move to United blocked by the south coast club who did not want to lose another key player in a summer that saw them sell Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama.

These comments from Varane will heighten speculation that Mourinho will look to target defensive cover again in the January transfer window, yet Bailly’s hugely impressive start to the new season has eased some of his concerns in the centre-back role.
