Influential Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has confirmed that the Spanish giants are interested in signing Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling.

The 20-year-old winger provoked huge debate last week when he gave an interview about his future and suggested that he may not be renewing his contract at Anfield last week, even thought he has been offered a fresh £100,00-a-week deal.

That prompted all the big-hitters to monitor proceedings with Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all thought top be keen on landing the youngster.

Real Madrid have been linked with Sterling in the past and Zidane has now confirmed that interest in an interview with the Daily Mail, where the former Bernabeu legend manages Real's B team offered up these comments.

“We know who Raheem Sterling is, and of course we are monitoring him as a player," Zidane stated.

“There are very few players in the world who can improve the Real Madrid squad, so it is going to make sense we monitor the progress of the best young players in the world.

“We monitored Bale for over a year, the same with Isco and also Varane.

“We monitor many of the best young players in Europe, then if we feel they have something to offer Real Madrid we will contact their club and try and make the next step.”

Zidane's comments revive memories of his outspoken remarks in the months before Real Madrid made their £86m move to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham in the summer of 2013.

In many ways, Zidane was used as the frontman to promote the Bale deal and these comments suggest he may perform a similar role in the pursuit of Sterling.

There are also suggestions that Zidane could take over as Real Madrid boss next season if Carlo Ancelotti is relieved of his duties.
