A 2-0 defeat away to Germany is no disgrace, especially after conceding both goals in the first 20 minutes. Here is how the Irish players rated.

Michael McGovern - Did what he had to do, making a fine save from Mario Gotze early on, but could do nothing to keep out both goals. 7/10

Lee Hodson - Making his first competitive start in three years, Hodson produced an accomplished performance down the right flank. Produced a vital touch to prevent Julian Draxler from doubling his tally in the first half. 8

Aaron Hughes - Was guilty of losing Mats Hummels in the box in the lead up to Germany's second goal. 6

Gareth McAuley - Not tight enough on Draxler for the opener, but recovered well to ensure Germany only found the net twice. 7

Jonny Evans - Solid performance, as ever, making sure he was in the correct positions to make several blocks and clearances in his own penalty area. 8

Shane Ferguson - Often on the back foot, trying to contain the advancing Joshua Kimmich, and was caught out of position early on. 6

Steven Davis - Again the driving force for Northern Ireland, attempting to help out Josh Magennis at every opportunity. 8

Oliver Norwood - Worked hard in midfield until he was withdrawn. Wasted two decent opportunities to shoot at goal, firing over both times. 6

Corry Evans - A steady performance. Won possession before surging forward in the first half, securing free-kick on the edge of the box which Norwood fired over. 7

Jamie Ward - Put the Germany defence on the back foot every time he got the ball, advancing from the left flank to lend a hand to Magennis. Should have worked Manuel Neuer more with a decent chance in the first half. 7

Josh Magennis - Isolated up front on his own, often left one-on-one with Hummels, but tested the Germany defence with his strength and power. 7

Substitutes

Niall McGinn (For Ward 60) - Showed a couple of neat touches but struggled to trouble the Germany defence with a cross. 6

Paddy McNair (For Norwood 72) - Added bite to the midfield in his brief cameo. Overhit a simple pass to a well-positioned Jonny Evans late on. 6

Kyle Lafferty - (For Magennis 75) - Did not have enough time to make an impact. 5
