Paris Saint-Germain have made Manchester United record signing Angel Di Maria their top transfer target this summer - and they are set to offer Dutch right-back Gregory van der Wiel as part of a potential deal.

Di Maria's difficult first season at United has been a big disappointment following his £59.7m move from Real Madrid last summer, with United boss Louis van Gaal confirming the Argentine has struggled to live up to his billing.

After Di Maria came close to joining PSG last summer, French newspaper L'Equipe are reporting that the Parisians are lining up a fresh move to try and sign Di Maria this summer.

They also claim Van der Wiel will be part of a transfer offer to United, after the 27-year-old play a key role in PSG's French title success this season.

The suggestion has been that Di Maria could move to PSG on loan, with a view to a permanent move, but United would prefer a permanent transfer as they look to remould their squad after finishing fourth in the Premier League season that finished on Sunday.

"Our plans for transfers are already underway," confirms Van Gaal. "I cannot say anything, but you will find out in due course when Manchester United have something to say."

One certainty is that Van Gaal appreciates the need to challenge for more than a top four finish next season, as he prepares for a summer of spending designed to put the club back into trophy contention.

"I know we have to fight for the title," he added. "We are a top club so we have to behave like a top club.

"Expectations will be higher next season but the pressure I put on myself is higher than the pressure I get from the fans."

United are on the look-out for a new right back and have been pursuing Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne since January, but the England youngster is unsure whether he is ready to make the step up to a top club just yet.

Clyne will make a final decision on whether to sign a new contract at Southampton in the coming days.
