Player ratings for Northern Ireland squad following loss to Germany
Our man in France has given his player ratings for the Northern Ireland squad following that 1-0 defeat to Germany.
Michael McGovern; Evoked the spirit of Tommy Wright in Nuremburg in 1996, pulled off a string of magnificent saves to prevent a thrashing and kept Northern Ireland hopes of progression alive. 9
Aaron Hughes; Mesmerized by Germany's rotating movement and lofted passing but showed tremendous composure in the face of tremendous adversity. 7
Craig Cathcart; Sloppy ball intercepted by Boateng for Germany's goal, but otherwise defended intelligently and stoutly under intense pressure. 7
Gareth McAuley; Once again, our best defender. Never gave up and along with McGovern responsible for preventing the dam bursting in the first half. 7
Jonny Evans; Not as assured as in the previous two group games, understandably. Often pulled out of position and shape by Muller but never gave up. 7
Steven Davis (c); Flashes of his ability but like his midfield cohorts just could not get his foot on the ball and get out of danger with trademark slick passing. 6
Corry Evans; Struggled to get any traction in the first half, better after the break but this game largely passed him by. Subbed for McGinn (84) 5
Ollie Norwood; Outnumbered and overwhelmed in the shielding role in midfield, linked much better with Davis in the second half but to no avail. 6
Jamie Ward; Unsure who to mark early on, Kroos or Hector. Should have dropped deeper on the overlapping full back, who had a field day. Replaced by Magennis (70). 5
Conor Washington; Showed trademark pace and power early on but his composure ebbed away as the game unfolded. Made way for Lafferty (59). 5
Stuart Dallas; Took time to adapt and cope with the outstanding Kimmich, unable to get his offensive game going but tucked in to help Jonny Evans in defence. 7
Substitutes; Kyle Lafferty (6) for Washington, Josh Magennis (6) for Ward, Niall McGinn (6) for C Evans.
