Player ratings as Tottenham Hotspur shocked by Gent in Europa League defeat

Jeremy Perbet celebrates scoring the game's only goal

Tottenham's continental nightmare took another turn for the worse after they endured a surprise 1-0 defeat to Gent in the last 32 of the Europa League.

After limping out of the Champions League group stage in November, Spurs now have work to do next week at Wembley if they are to avoid an early exit from Europe's second tier tournament, too.

Jeremy Perbet scored the winner just before the hour for Gent, who sit a lowly eighth in Belgium's top tier but fully deserved their victory against a painfully out-of-sorts Tottenham.

STAR MAN

Danijel Milicevic. The forward set up Perbet's winning goal and proved a constant menace down Tottenham's right side. He could have put Spurs out of sight had Hugo Lloris not tipped his finish on to the post late on.

MOAN OF THE MATCH

Mauricio Pochettino's side looked to be the Premier League's form team at the start of this year when they won seven games in a row but they seemed to have lost confidence and energy in recent weeks. They have now managed only two victories in six. With Fulham to come in the FA Cup on Sunday, their season could quickly unravel if they allow this dip to continue.

DATA POINT

Tottenham have now scored only one goal in their last four games in all competitions, having hit 12 in their previous four.
