Defoe's penalties denied Liverpool
Defoe's penalties denied Liverpool

Jermain Defoe denied Liverpool a fifth successive Premier League victory with a penalty double as Sadio Mane went from hero to villain at Sunderland.

The Senegal international, playing his final game before heading off an African Nations Cup duty, looked to have won the game 18 minutes from time after Defoe had cancelled out Daniel Sturridge's opening header.

However, his handball with five minutes left on the clock handed Defoe the opportunity to score his 11th goal of the season, and he obliged nervelessly to secure a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.

STAR MAN

Vito Mannone. Sunderland fans were bereft at news of Jordan Pickford's injury, such was the young goalkeeper's recent form. But Vito Mannone proved he is no half-measure stand-in against the title chasers. The Italian was in the game from the first few minutes and right until the end, making a series of good saves from hard-hit drives, placed curlers and one close-range block with feet.

KLOPP'S HALF-CENTURY

The charismatic Jurgen Klopp brought up his 50th Premier League game in charge of Liverpool at the Stadium of Light. Three points here took his record to 26 wins, 14 draws and 10 defeats. This setback has hurt the Reds' title hunt but there has been enough positivity this term to suggest the next 50 will bring a better points-per-game ratio than the current 1.84.

DATA POINT

It would be grossly unfair to blame Jack Rodwell for Sunderland's plight particularly when this was his first appearance since October 29, but he does seem to embody their misery. Although he left the field with the scores tied he has now started 34 games for the Black Cats without a win. Four more and he will have experienced the equivalent of a Premier League season without a win bonus.
